BLAST FROM THE PAST--MR. BILLY LEE (PERHAPS THE MOST IMPORTANT MAN OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION)
Mr. Billy Lee (on the right)
MORE RESEARCH was needed for my vignette because my producer, Bradley Hirou, asked me to do a screen write of my book, Why Is a Spy Called a Mole, OK-- grateful for the opportunity.
Mr. Billy Lee was not only gifted but a war hero. Commander George Washington had at least two aides: Alexander Hamilton was given due credit of being an aide to Washington in the Revolution, and historians of the day and today have missed the importance of his other aide Warrant Officer Mr. Billy Lee, who just happened to have saved Washington's life at least two times with his carbine (slaves were not allowed to carry a gun).
Mr. Billy Lee was the son of Col. John Lee who noticed that his son was talented and taught him to ride a horse, speak two languages, the art of accounting, and later great at fox hunting (in fact he strapped a french horn on his shoulder to alert when a fox was near!)
He was concerned about his sons, Billy and Frank, and made sure that on his passing
George Washington inherited them.
Washington insisted that people address Billy Lee, as "Mr. Billy Lee." The English had warrant officers since the 1600s and were supposed to be addressed as "Mr." for the rest of their lives.
Mr. Bille Lee carried a carbine and dressed in a uniform (sometimes fancier than Washington which Washington applauded).
Washington was a fine horseman but Mr. Billy Lee was Colony famous as the best horseman in the country and attracted people to Mount Vernon so they could see him ride--you know, jump fences and ride through the jungle of a virgin forest, tame stuff like that, and, of course, his horse, Chinkling was very famous too.
To repeat, so too was Washington, so Washington on his famous war horse, Nelson, (not the white horse, Blue) a sorrel with white stockings and an uneven blaze and just might have been the most famous war horse ever-- led the troops in the Revolution. Lee and Hamilton were like bodyguards and Washington would not go anywhere without Mr. Billy Lee--tall, handsome, sense of humor, book smart and street smart.
There are at least six paintings of Washington and Lee, one was recently sold for $26,000,000. Yes, those paintings of a handsome soldier in the back is Mr. Billy Lee.
One more thing, for now anyway, the above photo of General Francis Marion (The Swamp Fox) also had an aide, his black brother Oliver Marion) fought in the Revolution for 8 years and was honored by President George W. Bush.
Question: Were Mr. Billy Lee and Frank Lee related to Martha Washington?
I read many dusty old history books but would like to give a shoutout to two authors:
Ron Chernow, Washington a Life
Bill O'Reilly, Killing England
